Negombo Fish Market, Sri Lanka

Believe it or not, the #1 tourist site in Negombo is the massive fish market. It is not to be missed. Indeed, you can smell it from anywhere in town any time between sunrise and mid-afternoon. I love Asian markets, and this fish market was fascinating.
The fishing boats come in with their hauls every morning around 6:00.

Lots of different kinds of fish and squid.

Cuttlefish

There’s a lot of fish here, and no ice.

Most of it is sold by mid-day.

Picking through the fish.

Then there’s a lot of drying of fish.

Outrigger fishing boat on the beach.

Fishermen hauling in their nets.

We also visited a sea turtle rescue center where some turtles harmed in fishing nets are brought. They’re rehabilitated and returned to the sea.

There’s also a hatchery here.
