Albert Einstein said:
A human being is part
of a whole, called by us the “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He
experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the
rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind
of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a
few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by
widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the
whole of nature in its beauty.
This idea of freeing ourselves from our limited
self-point-of-view and embracing the whole of nature is the cornerstone of
Buddhism, at least as I understand it.
Buddhism teaches that if we observe the law of karma and
awaken in ourselves the good heart of love and compassion for all things
living, if we purify our mindstream and gradually awaken the wisdom of the
nature of our mind through this compassion, then we can become a truly human
being which is connected to all that is, and ultimately become enlightened.
Thank you for your insights, Albert.
