We
spent a day of driving mountain roads to get to Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, home
to the awe-imposing 14 towered Sree Meenakshi Temple. The temple is one of the
richest Hindu sites we’ve ever experienced. We attended the evening closing
ceremony and returned the next day to tour the massive complex.
Brahman Statue of the Bull.
Hall of a thousand pillars.
The high priest determines when the temple
closes each evening with an elaborate ceremony. We stood for over an hour
waiting for them to take this silver box from one temple room to another.
Tourist and locals looking on. Drums beat and
horns sound.
There are fourteen towers around the complex.
And this one pond for washing feet.
Brahman Statue of the Bull.
God of fertility.
The main fountain.
