Spain Vacation Day 4 0f 40

Up early to catch the bullet train to Hendaye, France. Hendaye is a French-Basque resort town right on the north-eastern border of Spain, just the other side of a river from Hondarribia and Irun, Spain. We bought sandwiches and boarded the train. The ride, 4 ½ hours, dropped us in Hendaye and we walked across a bridge over the river into Irun, Spain.

Irun, Spain is the starting place of the 600-hundred-mile Norte Camino de Santiago, which Herman and I have walked twice in the last five years. So, this was our third time staying in Irun. We checked into our hotel and cleaned up, then walked an hour through the town to a restaurant, Balestina, where we have eaten twice before and become friends with the owners. But when we arrived the restaurant was closed for the night due to a gas leak. We were disappointed because they serve fabulous Basque seafood. We had been looking forward to eating at Balestina for months. Fortunately, Flavor and Jason (the owners, a lovely gay couple) treated us to an Indian feast at a restaurant in Irun where we had mediocre fare but great conversation.
